Moving House with Intention – And Looking After What You Love

Moving house is more than just a change of address. It’s a fresh start—a chance to reassess how you live, what you need, and what still feels like you. But between the packing tape and removalists, it can also be a time of uncertainty, especially when it comes to furniture and interiors.
I often work with clients who are moving into a new home and want help making decisions about what to take with them, what to let go of, and how their existing pieces might be reimagined in a new space. These aren’t always easy calls—furniture holds memories, and sometimes the practicalities of the new home call for a fresh perspective.
Whether you’re starting from scratch or blending old with new, here are some thoughtful things to keep in mind during your move:
Not Everything Has to Come With You
One of the best ways to prepare for a move is to look at your furniture and ask: Does this still work for the way I want to live? Sometimes a beloved piece just needs a new purpose, and sometimes it’s time to part ways. Hiring a designer can take the pressure off these decisions—we look at your layout, lifestyle and style preferences and help you edit with confidence.
Handle the Pieces You Love with Care
If you’ve chosen your furniture carefully, you’ll want to move it with care. Dismantle where you can, use quality packing materials (moving blankets are ideal), and label everything clearly. High-value or sentimental items like designer furniture, artwork, or heirlooms may need special handling—don’t hesitate to ask your removalist about custom protection options.
Think Ahead to the New Space
Your new home has its own layout, light and energy. It’s worth considering how your existing pieces will sit in the space—will that large sectional work in a smaller living room? Could your dining table be repurposed as a desk or console? I often support clients with furniture placement plans and suggestions for new purchases that will work seamlessly alongside existing favourites.
Unpack Slowly and Thoughtfully
Once you’re in, try not to rush the process. Take your time to arrange things in a way that supports how you want to live in the space. This is a wonderful time to think practically as well as emotionally about your home—and how you want it to feel.
If you’re planning a move and feeling unsure about what to keep, what to change, or how to make your next home feel just right, I’d love to help. With a fresh set of eyes, and a designer’s insight into space, flow and functionality, I can help you create a home that truly reflects you—without the overwhelm.
Warmly,
Martha
