What Is the Standard Bathroom Vanity Height in Australia?

And How One Small Detail Became a Very Expensive Problem
I had a phone call this week from a client in the middle of what was supposed to be a fairly straightforward bathroom renovation.
The layout wasn’t changing.
No walls were moving.
No major redesign work.
The bathroom had experienced waterproofing issues, so the plan was simply to replace the finishes and reinstall everything more or less where it had been before.
Simple.
Or at least, that’s what everyone thought.

Then the installation started.
First, the towel rails went in too high and weren’t aligned properly.
Not ideal, but fixable.
Then came the bigger issue.
The bathroom vanity benchtop had been installed at 720mm high!! It was so obvious that it was installed too low!
What Is the Standard Bathroom Vanity Height in Australia?
In most Australian homes, the standard bathroom vanity height is usually somewhere between 850mm and 900mm, depending on the vanity design and the people using the space.
At 720mm high, this vanity was far too low for comfortable everyday use.
My client could tell it felt wrong immediately. She just didn’t know exactly why.
And this is something people often don’t realise about renovations.
The expensive mistakes are rarely the dramatic ones.
Usually, they’re small measurement decisions.Placement details.Things that seem minor at the time.
Until everything is installed.
Then suddenly, fixing them becomes complicated, expensive and frustrating for everyone involved.
In this case, the builder now needs to lift the vanity after installation, which means additional labour, delays and unnecessary cost.... all because one measurement wasn’t picked up earlier.
The Small Bathroom Renovation Details That Matter Most
This is also why I always say good bathroom design is about much more than choosing tiles and tapware.
A bathroom can look beautiful in photos, but if the vanity height feels awkward, the towel rails are positioned badly or the layout doesn’t function properly, you’ll notice it every single day.
Especially in a room you use multiple times daily.
Some of the most important bathroom renovation decisions are the ones people barely notice when they’re done properly:
Vanity height
Towel rail placement
Lighting positions
Power point locations
Door clearances
Storage access
Walkway spacing
Shower entry widths
When these things are considered early, the whole room feels calm and easy to use.
When they’re overlooked, the space can feel uncomfortable no matter how beautiful it looks

Why Professional Renovation Guidance Matters
A big part of my role during a renovation is helping clients identify these issues before they become expensive problems.
Sometimes it’s improving the layout.
Sometimes it’s spatial planning.
Sometimes it’s simply knowing the standard measurements and practical details that can easily get overlooked during construction.
And often, it’s giving clients the confidence to stop and question something before it’s too late.
Because even relatively simple renovations can become overwhelming very quickly.
There are multiple trades involved, endless decisions to make and a lot of moving parts behind the scenes. Even very capable people can find themselves second-guessing things halfway through.
That’s completely normal.
A good renovation process should feel clear, supported and well thought through — not stressful and reactive.
